Ode to Art
Even though I harbor a complicated and complex relationship with art as a result of my trauma, I am still appreciative of it and still pursue it. I define art as an expression of one's self told through a medium. Anything can be art—drawing, painting, writing, dancing, singing, music, video games, sculptures, film, videos, fashion, etc. The list is extensive to the point where I believe that everyone has made art before. That art doesn't have to be good or bad to be considered what it is—art.
I also believe that everyone has been influenced by art. Society as a whole wouldn't have advanced without art influencing us all. Think, what is special to you? That game you watched when you were 9? That one song you keep on looping? Your friends and family? Humans are an art form themselves. If you don't know what to create, then create yourself. Pursue what you love or else you'd be loathing what you could've been.
There are no rules in art so go on and define them yourself. While others can influence you, they cannot be you or your art. That's another thing I love about art, it's so unique to the individual who creates it. While we share similar experiences, how we perceive and express them will always differ from one another. It's those similar experiences that connect us through the lenses of art. To be understood is perhaps the greatest feeling man could ever feel.
With that, I encourage everyone to create an art. Doesn't matter what medium it is or how much you abhor your lack of skills, there will always be people who adore your expression in a multitude of ways that you might have never seen before. You can learn more about yourself with the more people who view your art, as these people's perspectives can help shape us just as how your art shapes them.
